The Kailash is the sanskit name of the mountain which means crystal. Tibetan called Gang Rinpoche which can be properly translate as the precious jewel of snow. Tibetan Bon tradition has many name for the mountain; water flower, mountain of sea water, and Swastika mountain. Another name of the mountain is Tisi in ancient Shang-shung language(locals of Kailash region), which means water peak or river peak for the major river in Asia flows from the mountain.
In Hinduism, the lord Shiva, the destroyer of illusion and ignorance, reside in the summit of Mount Kailash. The Mountain is also describe in Vishu Purana states that the four side are made of Crystal, ruby, gold and lapis lazuli. It is the pillar of the world and is located at the heart of six mountain ranges symbolizing a lotus.
In Jainism, the kailash is known as Meru Parvat or Sumeru. Ashtapada, the mountain next to kailash is the site where first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva attain enlightenment. Yet the authenticity of mount Kailash being mount Ashtapada is highly debated.
In Buddhism, tantric Buddhist believes the Mount Kailash as the home of Dhamchok, who repreesnt the supreme bliss. There are numerous site in the region associated with Guru Padmasambahava. Milarepa defeat the Naro bon chung on the site in terrifying sorcerers battle.
To tradition Tibetan home grown religion Bon, the Mt. Kailash is the seat of all the spiritual power.
Every year thousands make a pilgrimage to Mt Kailash following the tradition that goes back to thousands of years. Pilgrims of Buddhist and Hindu makes clockwise circumambulation and pilgrims of Jain and Bon tradition makes counterclockwise circumambulation to the mountain. The entire circumambulation of the Kailash is about 53km long and it usually take more then three days of trekking. There are two main option in making pilgrimage to Kailash; From Kathmandu and from Lhasa. From it take more days but it very suitable for group with children and elderly as it give more time for proper acclimatisation gradual ascend of the altitude.
